Waterproofing a natural pool

A pond brings a touch of freshness and serenity to the garden, accompanied by the gentle sound of water splashing. Ponds add a touch of originality while seamlessly blending into a natural environment. The presence of a water feature also provides an opportunity to maintain rich biodiversity.

Solution

Creating ponds can be done in a traditional manner. A coating made with PROMPT natural cement serves as a perfect waterproofing complement for concrete surfaces or block structures. The aesthetics of this solution will naturally integrate into your landscape design.

Technique

Penetrations through walls (windows, water inlets, and outlets, etc.) are specific points to address during the assembly of concrete blocks or formwork. The openings must be sufficiently large to accommodate sealing these elements. Additionally, these same specific points, as well as inward and outward corners, should be reinforced with a 10x10 mm fiberglass mesh.

Before applying the PROMPT natural cement mortar, it's crucial to prepare the concrete surface properly. Non-cohesive parts should be removed through chiseling. Gravel pockets need to be cleared and filled. Residues from formwork oil and cement laitance must be eliminated. The surfaces must be dust-free and dampened – thoroughly the day before and slightly on the day of application without leaving standing water. A bonding primer should be applied to smooth vertical concrete surfaces and flooring beforehand.

Following all the necessary steps for preparing the PROMPT natural cement mortar is essential, including using the TEMPO retarding agent or citric acid to control setting time regardless of weather conditions.

Before applying the coating, create rounded grooves at the wall/floor junction. The coating is applied in two layers. The first layer should be scratched after it starts to set to ensure the adhesion of the second layer. The second layer is applied in a crosshatch pattern over the dampened first layer in case of dry or windy weather. Once applied, it should be smoothed with a trowel. If the pond won't be filled with water immediately, a curing process is necessary.

Fields of application

The qualities of speed and waterproofing of PROMPT natural cement make it effective in water-related applications. It is recommended for waterway closure, crack sealing, and waterproofing.

Environmentally friendly to aquatic flora and fauna, it can also be used for creating natural pools.

Benefits of its application

Waterproofing and finishing a pond using PROMPT natural cement coating is a solution that offers :

  • Speed: no need for a separate finishing layer
  • Aesthetic appeal: its color resembles natural stone tones
  • Natural: no organic or synthetic waterproofing coatings

Advices

Install the mixing station directly in the pond, preferably in a shaded area. Store PROMPT cement bags in the shade if possible.
